This article describes the health authority response to the first autochthonous Chikungunya virus outbreak in Europe and the impact of the latter on the local blood transfusion system. Although less massive than the previous outbreak occurring on La Runion Island, the epidemics in Emilia-Romagna posed significant problems in terms of blood procurement. The approach developed on this occasion can serve as a model for similar future epidemics.
