NATA Review

This is a large observational study of 28,087 total hip replacement (THR) procedures to assess the relationship between allogeneic transfusion and outcomes. Transfused patients (32%) had a higher mortality rate and a significantly higher risk of pneumonia compared with matched non-transfused patients. The strengths of this study include its large sample size, despite the limitations of a retrospective analysis. It seems to confirm that transfused patients have a worse prognosis.
