Combined preoperative autologous blood donation and intra-operative cell salvage for hip surgery.

This retrospective, uncontrolled study provides no new insights. With a mean blood loss of 1095 mL and a postoperative hemoglobin level of 111 g/L, most of the patients probably did not need a transfusion anyway. No alternative method using only predonation or both intra- and postoperative cell salvage is discussed.
