NATA Review

The authors conducted an audit of plasma transfusion practice in their hospital network. The data date back to 2006 and appropriateness of transfusion was based on 1994 recommendations. Nevertheless, given the degree of uncertainty regarding plasma transfusion, it is not surprising to see that a majority of transfusions were not based on an abnormal coagulation profile. Those institutions that have adopted a transfusion algorithm based on specific laboratory (including TEG) variables have experienced a significant reduction in blood product transfusion.
