In this commentary, the authors provide a nice overview of pathogen reduction technology (PRT). The necessity of 6 log PRT technique is discussed. The figures underline the viral replication including kinetics, the impact of PRT and bacterial growth curve. Considerations of PRT for viruses, bacteria, protozoa as well as contaminating white blood cells are given.
