Thromboelastometrically guided transfusion protocol during aortic surgery with circulatory arrest: a prospective, randomized trial.

In this randomized controlled trial during aortic surgery, requirements for allogeneic blood, prothrombin complex concentrates and recombinant factor VIIa were reduced in the ROTEM-guided group, while fibrinogen concentrate usage was comparable between groups. Aside from improved quality of care by implementing a strict and pathophysiology-driven management protocol, health costs may be reduced.
