NATA Review

This study investigated the hepcidin concentrations in 92 patients admitted for systemic inflammatory response syndrome. The authors report a correlation between logarithmic interleukin-6 concentrations and hepcidin levels on admission. Persistence of high concentrations of hepcidin during the first 3 days was associated with a decrease in hemoglobin levels during the hospital stay, but not the admission value. Regrettably, no data regarding the other proteins of iron metabolism and patient characteristics were reported, limiting the interest of this study.
