Routine pre-operative cross-match for elective colorectal resections: An appropriate use of resources?

This observational study reports the crossmatch to transfusion (C/T) ratio in patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery. The reported C/T ratio of 3.7 to 1 is far too high and presents another transfusion-related cost issue as the cost for crossmatch may exceed more than 30% of overall transfusion costs.

This observation highlights a sometimes unrecognized and significant cost issue in transfusion medicine. The recommended C/T ratio of 2:1 for elective surgery should be implemented.
