Transfusion medicine is probably one of the less well-taught medical specialties. Most often, teaching is based on clinicians’ personal experience and “expertise”, not on the – too little – evidence available in the literature. We wholeheartedly agree with the authors’ conclusions that medical education in transfusion medicine should begin at the undergraduate level. It should then be pursued at the specialty level when relevant. Organizations like NATA strive to provide continuing education in transfusion medicine for all clinicians with an interest in the field.
