The authors reviewed all studies reporting on benchmarking in the field of transfusion medicine. Among the 45 studies included, only 7 could be classified as benchmarking. Major challenges identified by the authors include the definition of best practices and the development of cost-effective methods of data collection. Three different models of benchmarking that can be applied to the field of transfusion medicine are described along with their strengths and weaknesses.
