This article shows that there is an increased mortality and need for red cell transfusion in patients with thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis preoperatively. Unfortunately the article does not say what the causes of the platelet changes were in the majority of patients or whether any attempt was made to diagnose the cause or correct the problem preoperatively.
