Paolo Prandoni has been working in the field of venous thromboembolism for many years. His PESIT study provides a very nice explanation with regard to the link between syncope and pulmonary embolism (PE). The design is quite simple, reproducible and, for sure, these new data will help improve the care of PE patients.

The authors performed a systematic workup for PE in patients admitted for a first episode of syncope – regardless of whether there were alternative explanations for the syncope – and they showed very elegantly that PE was identified in nearly one in six patients hospitalised for a first episode of syncope.

These authors have to be commended for this very professional and unbiased study that will add to the understanding of this very severe clinical event.
