He trained in Medicine and Internal Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch and in Clinical Haematology at the Leuven University, Belgium.

He is a member of the WHO Working Group on Patient Blood Management Implementation. His research focuses on iron, transfusion and PBM. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.
