Summary: Patient Blood Management (PBM) is not just a clinical tool—it’s a key patient safety strategy. However, recent analysis has shown that although the benefits of PBM have been proven, it is yet not optimally introduced into clinical routine practice.

This session explores how PBM can reduce harm, improve outcomes, and optimize resources. However, it also addresses potential risks when PBM is misapplied and highlights the need for a team-based, patient-centred approach.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand PBM as a patient safety strategy
  • Appreciate PBM’s impact on outcomes and resource use
  • Understand possible barriers in implementing PBM
  • Evaluate possibilities to start PBM in clinical routine practice
  • Recognize risks of inappropriate PBM use
  • Embrace a team-based, patient-centered PBM approach
